FAQ

Each answer is short and ends with a link: when a question needs more than a few lines, the linked page answers it in full.

Does anything leave my machine, and to whom? What you record, never. To value a security, a coin or a wallet, the server sends its ISIN, ticker or public address to a few public services. Where the data comes from names each one.

Is it free, and under what licence? Free, under the AGPL-3.0: run it, read it, change it, and publish your changes if you serve a modified copy to others. The licence has the full text.

Does it work outside France? It runs anywhere, but every total is in euros, and the course and several simulators follow French tax rules and French figures. How it stays current says what one currency leaves out.

Can I install it on my phone? Yes, as a web app: the phone’s browser adds it to the home screen and it opens in its own window. It needs HTTPS with a certificate the phone trusts. Behind a proxy says why.

Can I install it without Docker? Not by any documented route: every install page runs the two containers of Docker Compose, and no other way is tested. Requirements lists what the machine needs.

Where do I upload my CSV? Nowhere: no CSV, OFX or QIF reader, and no upload screen. Operations are typed one at a time, or pushed in batches. The five ways in shows how.

Does Badlen sync with my bank? No: it uses no aggregator, screen-scraper or open banking. The only thing that updates on its own is a crypto wallet, from its public address. Why no bank sync explains what the law asks and what every comparable project does about it.

Can I hold an account in dollars? No. Nothing here converts money, so such an account is refused at creation and a foreign quote enters no total. How it stays current spells out what that leaves out.

What is the Moralis key in Settings → Access? The one that finds the ERC-20 tokens of a watched Ethereum address; without it the address reports its ether alone. A free Moralis account issues one. Where the data comes from says more.

There is no Add entry in the menu. Three controls lead to the add screen instead, and two of them are temporary. Your first account walks you through the first one.

My PEA is worth twice what it should be. The amount box asked for its cash, and an account’s value is that amount plus its lines. The amount field says which box expects what.

A line is worth nothing. The price source could not answer, or the quote came back in a currency nothing converts. Unpriced lines are counted separately. Holdings says where they show up.

I wrote a rule and nothing moved. Recategorize reads only what is filed nowhere; an operation already filed is never rewritten. Categories and rules covers the way around it.

Performance and the dashboard disagree. The dashboard reads your whole net worth; Performance reads the invested lines alone. Performance explains the gap.

Every amount is a dash. Hide amounts is on, and the eye on the dashboard and the user-menu entry are one switch stored on your account. Dashboard shows where it lives.

The FIRE card is missing from Projections. It is computed from a year of current-account spending, so with none on file it does not appear. Financial independence says what it needs.

Backup or export? Two copies: the JSON export is one reader’s data, the pg_dump is the whole machine. Take both. Taking backups sets them side by side.

How do I take my data with me if I leave? Settings → Data → Your data downloads everything your account holds as one JSON file, readable or sealed by a passphrase. There is no CSV export. Export your data walks through it.

What happens if I touch nothing for six months? Nothing breaks: quotes keep refreshing every night, and each balance you type stays at its last figure, labelled with its date. How it stays current explains why. The one exception is a relay you set up yourself: 90 days without signing in (60 or 180 if you chose so) start its reminders.

Can Badlen tell my family where my accounts are? Settings → Hand-over writes a letter for them, printed as a PDF, and can send it by email if you stop answering for a long time. It opens no account and replaces neither a will nor a notary. Hand over to your family explains both.

Is my data encrypted? Three columns are, your two-factor secret, your provider API keys and a relay’s opening code. The rest is in the clear. What is encrypted names every one of them.

My simulator figures are gone on another device. Every simulator but Monte Carlo keeps what you type in that browser alone, in no export. Simulators says which is which.

Where is the Administration tab? It appears only for an account whose role is admin, which on a fresh instance is whoever registered first. Open registration explains the rule.

I forgot my password. With a mail server configured the reset link is emailed to the account; with none, which is how an instance starts, it goes to the application log, where somebody with server access reads it. First start shows both, and Configuration the SMTP_* variables.

Can several people share one instance? Yes, each seeing their own data and none of anybody else’s. Managing users explains what an administrator can and cannot see.
